Hello,
The more you help a person, the better they perform at the moment. And the less they learn. It's hard to accept when you have the reflex to provide good support, yet it's one of the most solid findings in movement research.
The mechanism is simple. Your hand, your voice, a visual cue, all of these reduce uncertainty during the action. The person performs better, immediately.
But the more constant this help is, the more the body relies on it instead of building its own solution. This is called guidance dependency.
The performance during the session increases, the ability to succeed alone decreases. And the day you are no longer in the loop, everything collapses.
What this changes in your practice: every time you provide assistance, decide in advance when you will remove it.
Accept an uncomfortable phase, where the person fumbles and performs less well. It's precisely there that they learn autonomy.
Then measure what holds when you step back.
Providing assistance, adjusting it, and removing it at the right moment is a real skill. Knowing why a body remains dependent, and through which sensory input to make it autonomous, is where NRP begins, Neuro-Postural Reprogramming.
