Hello,
Our worst coaching reflex is to correct as soon as we see someone make a mistake. We think we're doing well. We often cut off the best part of learning.
Here is what an error is, viewed from the inside. The body constantly predicts what it will feel when moving. When what it perceives does not match what it expected, there is a discrepancy.
This discrepancy, this small disagreement between the expected and the real, is precisely what tells the nervous system that it needs to adjust.
No discrepancy, no update. By correcting before the error has informed the body, you extinguish the signal at its source.
This is not an invitation to chaos. There is a useful zone, around seven to eight successes out of ten.
Too easy, the body doesn't move, it has no reason to change.
Too hard, it shuts down and panics. In between, it searches, and it learns.
What this changes in practice: when the person makes a mistake, wait one more second. Let the error produce its information before intervening. Count the number of times they correct themselves without you. You will be surprised.
This principle, we give it without keeping it, like everything we share about motor learning, because it's the foundation and our real work is elsewhere.
What a body does with this discrepancy, how it recalibrates, and why sometimes it can't do it alone, is the heart of RNP, Neuro-Postural Reprogramming.
