Discover how central and peripheral vision influence our posture. One is essential for accuracy, the other for balance. Don’t miss these keys to better understand your body!

Our postural system relies simultaneously on two distinct visual windows: the fovea (≤ 2 ° field) and the peripheral field (up to 180 °).
They provide neither the same information nor the same robustness against disturbances.
Fixating on a cross at 1m triggers an oculomotor-cerebellar control that corrects any drift on the retina; postural adjustment follows within a few tens of milliseconds.
Without this "visual nail", the system shifts towards vestibular + proprioception, which is less precise for micro-corrections.
The lateral optical flow indicates to the brain whether the body is translating or tilting.
In a moving subway, this signal predicts the swaying of the carriage; posture synchronizes to keep the head stable in space.
If this flow is inconsistent (e.g., poorly calibrated VR), the sensorimotor loop becomes disorganized: nausea, excessive sway, or even falling.
Fixed scenery: the fovea dominates; the periphery serves as "watch".
Moving scenery: periphery ↑; the fovea maintains a reference but does not prevent swaying if the lateral flow is violent.
Visual deprivation: the system reverts to vestibular and proprioception; variability increases, as does muscular co-contraction (Purves 2019).
Central vision pinpoints the body on a precise reference, while peripheral vision acts as a visual gyroscope. Their complementarity allows us to stand and adapt to a moving environment.
