Golgi tendon organs (GTO), located at the muscle-tendon junction, measure active tension. They protect the musculoskeletal system and regulate force.
From 2 N, Ib discharge frequency increases linearly. Captures fine variations without saturation.
Ib → inhibitory interneuron → inhibits α motor neuron. Protective loop (~50 ms) against overload.
Higher centers reduce Ib inhibition → maintain high force (weightlifting). Sometimes excite Ib.
Ib interneurons redistribute load: inhibit overly active agonists, facilitate antagonists → joint stabilization.
GTOs act as torque sensors: protect tendons, regulate force, and adapt to power/precision needs.
Proprioception has become the most used and least understood word in the French-speaking movement field. And this ambiguity is not trivial. As long as it lasts, we prescribe in the fog. We see exercises. We don't see what they engage.
