Discover how self-defense can aid in managing emotions and stress with Benjamin Heckel, trauma expert and boxing therapy practitioner.
In this episode, we explore self-defense as a tool for managing emotions and stress. Benjamin Heckel, a former law enforcement officer, discusses his organization, Mathilde Sport, dedicated to women who are victims of domestic violence.
Benjamin founded Mathilde Sport to offer self-defense workshops for women affected by violence. These workshops go beyond combat techniques; they primarily focus on helping participants manage their emotions and respond to the violence they experience.
Initially, Benjamin aimed to teach physical defense techniques. However, he quickly realized that the real work lay in psychological support. The women he assists often have traumas that affect their balance and coordination. Before learning to defend themselves, they need to learn how to manage their stress and believe in their abilities.
Benjamin recently completed training in boxing therapy, which uses boxing to help women regain self-confidence. This fun and engaging approach allows them to progress both physically and emotionally throughout the sessions.
He shares touching examples, such as a woman who regained mobility in her knee after working on her emotions. This connection between body and mind is essential in the healing process.
The workshops consist of three parts: a theoretical phase on self-defense, a practical phase with striking techniques, and finally, stress management tools. Each session introduces a new tool, such as visualization or relaxation, that participants can use in their daily lives.
Benjamin prioritizes small groups to ensure confidentiality and allow each woman to share her experience. He also collaborates with health professionals to enrich the workshops and provide additional support.
Self-defense is not just about physical techniques; it is also a means to restore self-esteem and manage stress. To learn more or to participate in Mathilde Sport workshops, you can find Benjamin on Instagram and Facebook, where he shares tips and insights from his sessions.
Benjamin also travels throughout the Sarrebourg region and is considering opening workshops in other cities in the Grand Est. Feel free to contact him if you wish to benefit from his expertise.
