Discover the approach of functional neurology in MMA with Ryan Gillet, coach at MMA Factory, who shares his experience and practical advice.
In this episode, we welcome Ryan Gillet, a coach specialized in performance optimization, primarily in the context of MMA. Ryan works with elite athletes at MMA Factory in Paris, including renowned fighters like the Lapidus brothers and Cyril Gane, one of the top French fighters currently in the UFC.
Ryan began his journey by exploring posturology in 2018. He understood the importance of posture in athletic performance. After medically-oriented training, he turned to more practical approaches, particularly functional neurology.
Ryan explains that functional neurology is easier to apply than other clinical approaches, especially in the sports environment. He started implementing this approach in 2021, noticing that few elite athletes were using it with their trainers. He cites Teddy Riner as an example of an athlete who has integrated this method.
Ryan describes how he has managed to show instant results to his athletes using neurological stimulation techniques. For instance, he observes significant changes in muscle contraction capacity within seconds through specific exercises.
To evaluate the effectiveness of his methods, Ryan uses manual tests before and after applying neurological techniques. He also has access to performance data using machines, allowing him to observe measurable improvements during training.
Ryan recommends that athletes incorporate simple reflex exercises into their routine. For example, by placing a hand against their forehead and pushing, they can enhance their muscle contraction before performing sets of exercises. This method is quick and effective, taking only 10 to 15 seconds.
He also emphasizes the importance of keeping a playful aspect in training. This helps athletes stay engaged and learn more quickly.
Ryan Gillet has provided us with a fascinating insight into the application of functional neurology in MMA. To follow his work, he is active on Instagram under the name Ryan_Gilet and also on the Modern Diamant account, where he shares his experiences and advice.
