Discover the magic of the sensorimotor loop: a fascinating circuit where perception and action merge in an instant, orchestrating precise and fluid movements!

Imagine you leap to catch a ball: even before leaving the ground, your body has already calculated the effort, subtly shifted the center of mass, and pre-tensed the postural muscles. This express cascade illustrates the sensorimotor loop, a closed circuit that transforms, hundreds of times per second, perception into action.
Four channels continuously scan the internal state and the environment: vision (spatial references), vestibular (head accelerations), proprioception (muscle length and tension), and plantar touch (pressure on the ground) (Purves 2019).
Nerve potentials from these sensors ascend to the spinal cord and brainstem. This "ascending" step establishes the first snapshot of the body (Shumway-Cook & Woollacott 2017).
In the cerebellum, the efferent copy (what the brain plans to do) is compared to sensory feedback (what is actually happening). If the discrepancy exceeds a threshold, a correction is formulated in less than 100 ms — well before reaching consciousness (Reyrolle 2024).
Before voluntary movement (jumping, hitting, changing direction), reflex contractions redistribute tone and slightly shift the center of pressure; these APAs begin ~150 ms before the action (Shumway-Cook & Woollacott 2017). They ensure a stable platform from which the driving force will surge.
Three main pathways then convey the command:
The gesture produces a new sensory flow that loops back to the cerebellum; the next correction is already being prepared. This uninterrupted circulation allows for maintaining balance while adjusting the trajectory of a sprint or the finesse of a tennis backhand.
The sensorimotor loop is a predictive autopilot: it combines multimodal information, error calculation, and motor execution to maintain posture and refine dynamic motor skills. Intervening at any stage (improving peripheral vision, stimulating the vestibular system, sharpening proprioception) can thus accelerate corrections, reduce postural fatigue, and optimize movement performance.
